THE NEED  [Top]

Financial recovery is one of the hottest topics in our world.  We are all aware of the effects of market crashes, too-easy credit, financial crunch, and personal bankruptcy.  We now have a generation largely blind to the basics of good money management.  The need among the poor and those with a criminal history is even greater.  More than two-thirds of typical jail and prison inmates have less than a 9th grade education.  All too often they depend on their "ship coming in" through the lottery or engage in uncontrolled spending and waste already scarce resources. Or they may turn to what they see as the easy or only way out - drugs, crime, or sex.  They desperately need help in learning new ways of managing and earning money or many will repeat the life that has brought them down .

OUR ANSWER  [Top]

It is our position that large numbers of  people need basic, practical, and immediate help in bringing their financial ship back under control.  They need information, support, and spiritual guidance. We attempt to help individuals become good Christian stewards of their money. We have developed our unit, Financial Success from Scratch, to help those who have experienced financial collapse to work their way out.

Our emphasis
is on the most basic principles. This includes  good instruction  on topics like "Managing Money is as Important as Making Money" and "Getting and Keeping a Job".  As an example of the level of basic need we go to, we start with the reasons of even having a personal checking account before being willing to learn how to balance one. Some people have never had a checking account and depend on wasteful check cashing services. Our spiritual teachings emphasize discussion and  scriptural studies  that teach us how to manage money and learn to be  generous people who are givers, regardless of how much we have.

 OUR APPROACH  [Top]

Unit 6 materials can be used with either large or small groups. There is enough content to be appropriate for large group study.
Small groups can be "open" in style, meaning that the content is not particularly sensitive and confidential.  Therefore the restrictions of closing the group to newcomers after the first session is not as crucial as in the much more deeply personal studies of units 2-5.

Both guides, facilitator and group member, are formatted for maximum group discussion and interaction.  The questions at the end of each lesson have proved to be very popular.  They are very simple but provide help give the participants the feeling of whether "they got it" or not.

Finacial F Guide

F GM Guide
Facilitator Guides  are page-by-page replicas of the group member guides with additional helps, guiding questions, and commentaries for each of the group activities and discussions. Facilitator notations are color-coded for easier use in conjunction with the student guides in use.

Group Member Guides  contain write-in space for questions, fill-in tables such as a sample budget and expense list, and write-in space for reflection on related scripture verses.

The course is seven lessons long with each lesson building on the previous one.  Problem solving skills are threaded throughout the unit.

These materials are quite appropriate for use in churches, rehab centers, and prisoner re-entry training.
Jail and Prison facilitators trained by us may be eligible for special funding for free student guides for active sessions. For more information, check our training schedule, or email us info@100hour.org or write us at
